Mothers’ Union Nativity 2012-13

Cranleigh, Surrey

The Mothers’ Union at St Nicolas church in Surrey asked me to make a window about the Holy Family that included Joseph. The window was under some beautiful Burne-Jones musical angels, so we decided on the Nativity.

Mary holds her baby close and Joseph shines a lamp to show him off to the shepherds. A tiny mouse represents the animals in the stable. The star of Bethlehem shines overhead. The Wave of Prayer is depicted at the base.

There are faint oak leaves painted on the background quarries to represent Surrey, and they also do an important job helping to filter the light from the south-facing window.

“I wanted to write a note of thanks and say how much in the Cranleigh Mothers’ Union we treasure our / your window and our friendship with you,” Brenda in Cranleigh.
